Remembering Gil Scott-Heron ... and a jazz chart success

Poet-musician-rap progenitor Gil Scott-Heron was remembered and honored at last weekend’s African World Festival along with Bob Marley and Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Scott-Heron is honored again Thursday (Aug. 25) in acoustic music, poetry and prose with performances by jessica Care moore, Invincible, and Ren Cen outside the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, 315 E. Warren Ave., Detroit; 313-494-5800. The event moves inside in the event of rain.

Meanwhile, Scott-Heron is receiving posthumous success on the jazz charts with a record of his material by the singer Giacamo Gates.

The Revolution Will Be Jazz: The Songs of Gil Scott-Heron is to show as No. 1 in the Aug. 29 airplay chart for the JazzWeek.com. (That’s according to a press release and chart attachment from the Savant record label. Jazzweek.com still shows the Aug. 22 chart with Gates’ Scott-Heron project at No. 27 for its first week listed.)

The Connecticut-based Gates covers Scott-Heron classics, including “Winter in America,” “Lady Day and John Coltrane” and “It’s Your World.”
