It’s safe to say Detroit's Assemble Sound — or “the church,” as it is endearingly referred to as by its residents — definitely has a sound. In the past few years, the recording studio-artist residency-licensing company has gained a reputation for cranking out polished pop artists. Its latest up-and-coming R&B and pop hopeful is Cheer Captain, aka Judson Branam. Branam released his debut EP, Retaliation, earlier this year and has followed it up with a video for the record’s title track.
The video mirrors the song’s somber mood and features Branam contemplating the fate of his relationship. It’s shot on the altar of Assemble Sound, steps away from where the entire EP was recorded. Branam says he wrote this song over the course of a year, partially during his residency at Assemble. “Being a resident at Assemble Sound is nothing short of amazing,” says Branam. “The amount of growth I’ve experienced as an artist during the time that I’ve been working here is massive, and it’s all due to the positivity and encouragement of my fellow artists and everyone else involved in this beautiful place.”
This growth seems to include learning the quintessential ingredients for a sad boy pop song: silky vocals, honest and angsty lyrics, and of course, the hook. Watch the full video, out today, below.
