Two years ago the Detroit Opera House opened their rooftop patio for public use during baseball games. Sky Deck offered a unique vista, a 360-degree view of the city, one arguably unrivaled in downtown Detroit. Sun sails, modern couches, and greenery outfitted the space. It's casual enough to enjoy during a Detroit Tigers game, but swanky enough to feel comfortable grabbing drinks in cocktail attire.
Now in its third season of operation, Sky Deck has undergone a transformation but still retains its cool air. Recent renovations have seen the nearly 10,000-square-foot space updated with colorful pavers made from recycled tires, giving the rooftop floor a forgiving squish. According to Jason Warzecha, the Detroit Opera House's director of theater and parking operations, florists are also being consulted and more garden aspects will be added to the space before the June 12 season opener. Built-in stone-covered bars have been added too, and overall the changes enhance to the already unique and inviting space. The view has also been updated — patrons can clearly spot Shepard Fairey's new mural from the deck.
The renovations likely won't end any time soon.
"Every year we add something new," Warzecha says. "We keep changing the space. We plan each year to bring in a new element."
One thing that will remain the same at Sky Deck is their five for $25 deal, which allows patrons to purchase their cover along with four menu items that include beer, wine, cocktails, soft drinks, hamburgers, and hot dogs. Other ballpark-style fare, like chicken wings and chips, is available too along with select vegetarian options.
Come June 12 Sky Deck will be open for every Friday and Saturday Tigers home game as well as for special events like the Detroit fireworks. Doors open two hours before game time, and cover is $5 after 8 p.m., unless otherwise noted on their schedule. Warzecha says the space will remain open until around the second week of October, weather permitting.
