People liked the Meijer rankings we did a couple of months ago, so we decided to do the same for local Kroger stores.
While there are no locations for the Ohio-based grocery store chain within the city of Detroit, there are many in the tri-county area. Some of them are pretty solid, but many of them are, well, not so great.
We compiled information from Yelp!, Google reviews, and our own experience to rank a selection of local Kroger stores from worst to best, taking into consideration things like food selection, length of lines, appearance, and overall vibes.
Read on so you know which ones to avoid and which ones to frequent.
20. Oak Park Kroger
26200 Greenfield Rd., Oak Park
This Kroger is just the worst, according to Yelp! reviews. The staff and fellow shoppers are rude, sometimes there’s barely any cashiers, and it has been described as “nightmarish.” 0/10, would not recommend. Credit: Google Maps19. Warren Kroger
26233 Hoover Rd., Warren
There’s a few Kroger stores in Warren to choose from, but this one seems to be the most prominent. Not really for good reason, though — while not everyone hates it, many Google reviews say it’s filthy, the produce is bad, and the lines are long. Since you have the choice, it’s probably best to go to a different store. Credit: Google Maps18. Ferndale Kroger
8920 Eight Mile Rd., Ferndale
One Google review of this Kroger from just a few months ago reads: “THIS IS THE WORST KROGER IN DETROIT, THEY NEVER HAVE ANYTHING, THE EMPLOYEES OPENLY DON’T CARE. JUST CLOSE THIS STORE.” Almost all of the recent reviews are terrible — from the cleanliness to the shelves to the service to the lines. Honestly, that’s all you need to know. Credit: Google Maps17. Roseville Kroger
26130 Gratiot Ave., Roseville
The Meijer in Roseville was ranked the worst, and the Kroger isn’t much better. Anything located on this stretch of Gratiot is overwhelming. The store is too big, there are frequently long lines, and it’s just not very chill at all. If you’ve ever been there, it probably left a mark in your memory that you’d rather forget. Credit: Google Maps16. Grosse Pointe Village Kroger
16919 Kercheval Ave., Grosse Pointe
Having to pay for parking at the grocery store is blasphemous. Plus, the parking lot here is almost as tight and claustrophobic as the inside of the store. This Kroger is way smaller than most, with only two regular lanes and a small self-checkout area. It’s definitely anxiety producing, especially if you’re not used to the vibes of Grosse Pointe Village. If you live in the neighborhood, this Kroger will get the job done, but if you like to be able to breathe, avoid it if possible. Credit: Google Maps15. Hazel Park Kroger
23101 John R. Rd., Hazel Park
The staff at this Kroger are nice, but the lines are long af and the self checkout is “absolutely ridiculous,” according to Google reviews. It’s not the worst, but definitely not the best. Credit: Google Maps14. Southfield Kroger
19855 W. 12 Mile Rd., Southfield
This Kroger is OK if you need to grab something quick, but it’s not a pleasant experience. It has a strange smell, according to a Yelp! review. It’s definitely giving old and could use an update. Credit: Google Maps13. Dearborn Kroger
23303 Michigan Ave., Dearborn
While this Kroger is apparently “going downhill,” according to Yelp! reviews, it is at least better than the other Dearborn Kroger down the road. The lines are long, but it usually has what you need, with a staff that is hit or miss. Credit: Google Maps12. Westland Kroger
7350 N. Middlebelt Rd., Westland
This Kroger is mediocre. Sometimes it has great products, while other times things are expired or out of stock, according to Yelp! reviews. Credit: Google Maps11. Taylor Kroger
7000 Monroe Blvd., Taylor
Since this location is so big, it usually has everything, but can be hard to navigate, Yelp! users say. There’s always a ridiculous line and the produce sucks. Some people love it, though. Credit: Google Maps10. Birmingham Kroger
685 E. Maple Rd., Birmingham
Sort of like the Grosse Pointe Park Kroger, this one is in a building that should only be used for small farmer’s market grocery stores, not a Kroger. It’s too small, but it does have a good-sized parking lot. It’s short-staffed and the lines can get long, but it’s clean and the selection and quality of items is better than most. Mid. Credit: Google Maps9. Royal Oak Kroger
2200 E. 12 Mile Rd., Royal Oak
This store is generally clean and well maintained, according to Google reviews, and it has more options than smaller Kroger stores. Often, however, there is only one full service checkout open, so the self-checkout line can be long. Credit: Google Maps8. Livonia Kroger
30935 5 Mile Rd., Livonia
For some reason, the Meijer and Kroger in Livonia both have very unique exteriors. The barn-like Meijer is just strange, but this Kroger honestly looks cool af and modern. The interior, though, doesn’t really live up. It’s not the worst, but very mediocre in all areas. Credit: Google Maps7. Grosse Pointe Woods Kroger
20422 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Woods
This is definitely the best Grosse Pointe Kroger. It’s more spacious and less pretentious than the one in the village. The staff and availability of items is hit or miss, visitors report, but it’s usually clean and has what you need. Credit: Google Maps6. Dearborn Heights Kroger
26400 Ford Rd., Dearborn Heights
If you live in Dearborn and want a better grocery shopping experience, you may just want to go a little further to Dearborn Heights. Still not the best, but according to Google reviews, the atmosphere is inviting, it’s usually clean and well stocked, and the staff are friendly. Credit: Google Maps5. Lincoln Park Kroger
2060 Dix Hwy., Lincoln Park
When it comes to grocery shopping in Downriver, this is the go to. Most of the other Krogers in the area were so bad we didn’t even mention them, but this one is actually pretty nice. There’s some issues with staff and cleanliness at times, according to Google reviews, but it got a more modern, spacious look a few years back that’s made things better. It usually has everything you need and it’s definitely the best choice in the area. Credit: Google Maps4. Saint Clair Shores Kroger
22801 Harper Ave., St. Clair Shores
This Kroger was just built around five years ago, so it’s super nice, modern, and big. It’s overwhelming to some, especially those who were used to the older Saint Clair Shores Kroger down the road. Overall, though, it’s stocked well, clean, and has good customer service, with a spacious parking lot and interior. Credit: Google Maps3. Canton Kroger
1905 N. Canton Center Rd., Canton
With fresh produce, a good location, and a huge selection of products, this Kroger is better than most. Everyone makes mistakes, but it’s better quality than most other Kroger stores surrounding it, that’s for sure. Credit: Google Maps2. Harper Woods Kroger
20903 Harper Ave., Harper Woods
We were lowkey surprised that this Kroger was rated better on Google and Yelp! than any other store on the list. But honestly, it’s pretty perfect. It’s nothing fancy and has some minor issues sometimes, but it’s not too big or too small. It has what you need along with a chill environment and staff. Plus, it’s right off the freeway if you want to easily visit from another nearby city. Credit: Google Maps1. Troy Kroger
1237 Coolidge Hwy., Troy
From just the outside of this Kroger, it looks like it should be No. 1. There’s a few locations in Troy, but this one is the best. It’s big, but not too wild that it’s overwhelming. The employees are friendly, the shelves are well stocked, and there’s a great selection of produce, according to Google reviews. This Kroger is the crown jewel of metro Detroit.
