The Detroit Zoo's latest promo has us whiffin'.
In honor of earth day, the zoo says it will give out hundreds of buckets of its "zoo poo," free of charge.
Why would you want it? Not for the smells, of course. Planting season is upon us, and animal manure makes a great fertilizer.
How do you get it? The zoo says you should be one of the first 1,000 people to visit its anaerobic digester educational display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14. Detroit Zoo Poo is an herbivore compost processed in the digester and produced in partnership with Detroit Dirt.
The anaerobic digester every year converts 500 tons of animal manure and other organic waste into methane-rich gas to help power the Zoo’s animal hospital, leaving a nutrient-rich fertilizer as a byproduct. The zoo says the digester is the first in Michigan and the only zoo-based system of its kind in the country.
The poo giveaway is part of the zoo's GreenFest, which will showcase other Detroit Zoo Society sustainability initiatives. The zoo has stopped selling water bottles, for example, and says the initiative diverts about 60,000 plastic bottles from the waste stream every year.
