'Creem' doc gets new trailer ahead of Detroit premiere

Boy Howdy! — the upcoming documentary about the irreverent former Detroit-based music magazine Creem — has a new trailer ahead of its premiere at the Freep Film Festival in April.

In the clip, the likes of Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, the Black Keys’ Patrick Carney, and actor and musician Jeff Daniels discuss what was so great about "America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine," or Detroit's answer to Rolling Stone.

"Buying Creem was a little bit like buying Playboy," Daniels says. "You didn't want your parents to see either one of them."

The film will premiere March 10 at SXSW in Austin, Texas before getting its Detroit premiere on April 10 at the Freep Film Festival. Fittingly, the movie will be screened at Detroit's Fillmore.

The film was co-produced by JJ Kramer, the son of the magazine's late founder, Barry Kramer. “Making this film opened my eyes to so many things about my father and the magazine,” the younger Kramer told Rolling Stone. “The good: He was brilliant, a visionary, and left an indelible mark on almost everyone he came in contact with. The bad: He was an antagonistic provocateur with a Detroit-sized chip on his shoulder, which helped to create the beautiful chaos at Creem.”
