Before Colin Newman teamed up with wife Malka Spiegel, Newman was busy fronting Wire — who are often revered as punk’s ultimate cult band. Hell, its debut, 1977’s Pink Flag, is still regarded as a hallmark of the first wave of British punk. Meanwhile, in Tel-Aviv, Spiegel was busy with her Israeli rock band Minimal Compact.

The two would meet in ’85 and would later marry and form Immersion, where Newman and Spiegel have traded in the sludge-y new wave punk of their seminal projects for synth-heavy, atmospheric jams. 2018 marked the release of Sleepless, the duo’s first album as Immersion since 1999’s Low Impact.

Immersion will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 7 at Third Man Records;  441 W. Canfield St., Detroit; 313-209-5205; thirdmanrecords.com; Tickets are $10-$12.
