Speaking of Motor City legends, former SRC lead guitarist Gary Quackenbush will be playing every Thursday night in September at PJ’s Lager House in Corktown, with the series kicking off this coming Thursday, September 4th at 10 p.m.
Quackenbush was a founding member of SRC, which was signed to Capitol Records during the flurry of phenomenal late ‘60s Detroit rock that gave birth to the Stooges, the MC5, the Rationals and the Bob Seger System (also scooped up by Capitol around the same time), among numerous others. (The band was originally turned down by Motown’s Rare Earth Records, where Berry Gordy placed a few of Detroit’s white-boy rock bands at the time; the label would eventually release an SRC disc in 1972, however).
Billing the shows as SRC Thursdays (which ain’t total truth in advertising, since the band was named after Scott Richardson — as in the Scott Richardson Case — who, of course, won’t be there
but that’s OK, since it was Quakenbush and his brother, Glenn, who originally started the band and Richardson was added later when the legendary late Jeep Holland became their manager and decided they needed a different lead vocalist; it was between Richardson and a dude named James Osterberg who later became Iggy Pop, btw), Quakenbush will be performing SRC material, including their 1967 regional hit cover recording of Skip James’s “I’m So Glad” (also covered by Cream), as well as featuring material from his first solo album, GQ In A Shade of Blue, recently released on SRC Records.
The Lager House has been presenting a lot of quality shows as of late, in case you haven’t been paying attention. One show we should definitely mention is the appearance tomorrow night (Sept. 30th) of frequent MT scribe Michael Hurtt’s band, Michael Hurtt & His Haunted Hearts, making their Detroit debut. The New Orleans-born band, which almost had to disband in the aftermath of the Katrina tragedy, strives to revive the now often-forgotten Big Easy tradition of hillbilly music. Also on the bill are Bones Maki, Jennie Knaggs & the Sure Shots and the Homeville Circle. Doors are at 10 p.m.; admission is an unbeatable free.
