On Friday, May 11, the Mosaic Youth Theater of Detroit will conclude its 20th Celebration season by reviving the musical Now That I Can Dance – Motown 1962.
The show will run for two consecutive weekends from May 11th thru May 20th at the Detroit Film Theatre at the DIA.
According to the press release, “Written by Mosaic Founder and CEO, Rick Sperling, the idea for Now That I Can Dance – Motown 1962 took root 20 years ago – right around the time he was starting Mosaic. During a visit to the Motown Historical Museum, Sperling noticed a picture of four teenage girls. Their youthful exuberance and playful energy mirrored that of Mosaic’s young performers. The caption on the photo read, “The Marvelettes.” For Rick, that photo was tangible proof that it was possible for talented Detroit-area young people to change the world, just as the women in that photo had. “
“Now That I Can Dance recounts the early days of Motown, before Diana Ross reigned supreme, Little Stevie became a legend, and five young girls from Inkster, Michigan, (the ones in the photo still adorning Sperling’s office wall) were destined to make musical history. When the Marvelettes recorded Motown’s first No. 1 pop hit, “Please Mr. Postman” in 1962, most of its artists – The Supremes, The Marvelettes, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Contours and Stevie Wonder – were between the ages of 12 and 21, the same age as Mosaic’s young artists.”
Now That I Can Dance – Motown 1962 is performed at the Detroit Film Theatre inside the DIA, 5200 Woodward Ave. Detroit, MI 48202 (John R. Entrance) Performances of Now That I Can Dance take place at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 11th and 18th and Saturday, May 12th and 19th and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 13th and 20th.
