Speaking of Charlie Auringer, as Lester was in the item below, another guy who used to work in the CREEM art department for Charlie has an art show opening up in Detroit this coming Thursday, August 23rd. Gary Grimshaw is not just a Detroit legend but one of the national legends of psychedelic music posters from the '60s and beyond. He's the dude who came up with the MC5 logo, which is just one of his many, many artistic accomplishments. (He also designed the album cover for my own band's one LP, though that's hardly one of his greatest accomplishments...) The former White Panthers member/'60s revolutionary returned to Detroit in 2003 after 14 successful years in San Francisco and the Motor City should be proud to have him back. The show, dubbed "Gary Grimshaw: Music Posters 1966-2006," is being held at Eastern Market's Butcher's Inn, 1489 Winder St (2 blocks east of Russell) in Detroit. The opening night artist reception begins at 6 p.m., with a special performance by another of the city's '60s golden boys, John Sinclair, at 9 p.m. See ya there...
