UAW workers rally in support of historic strike in Detroit

The UAW launched a historic strike against the Detroit “Big Three” automakers; the first time the union has ever been on strike against all three companies at the same time. Under its new president Shawn Fain, the union is fighting for better wages, an end to concessions that were brokered during the 2007-2008 financial crisis, and assurances that the transition to a new green economy will not leave workers behind, among other demands. Officials like Sen. Bernie Sanders, U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer spoke in support of the union at a rally in downtown Detroit on Friday, not far from where the city’s annual North American International Detroit Auto Show’s charity gala is held.
