With the rise of online shopping and websites like JustFab.com, Payless ShoeSource is closing 10 Michigan stores after filing bankruptcy protection yesterday.

"This is a difficult, but necessary, decision, driven by the continued challenges of the retail environment, which will only intensify," the company's CEP, Paul Jones, said.

Three metro Detroit stores are unfortunately closing. 5616 W. Vernor Hwy., Detroit, 2121 N. Monroe St., Monroe, and 33389 Van Dyke, Sterling Heights. The other closings in Michigan are in Adrian, Alpena, Bay City, Benton Harbor, Big Rapids, Cadillac, and Okemos. All together, the company is closing 4,400 stores worldwide.

Employees can relocate to a nearby store if there is an opening, or receive severance pay.
