Like many homes on Detroit’s west side, 7034 Holmes St. stands empty in a neighborhood near Livernois and Warren. Built in 1924 when the city was a much different place, the home appears to have held up well structurally. It needs a new roof and porch, but the inside seems to lack any major damage. A neighbor informed us that the last tenants appeared to be squatters, with about eight kids. The Abandoned Structure Squad took a look inside and found baby clothes and toys strewn about.
Tracking down the owners of abandoned properties can be a huge game of cat-and-mouse. However, after clawing through much red tape we were able to ascertain that the Bank of New York foreclosed on the property in February 2002, and still holds the deed. Marino Mercedes, landlord for two other houses on the street, claims he has been trying to find information on the property for the last few weeks, to no avail. “I had heard that Century 21 in Westland was handling the realty, but I haven’t heard back from them yet,” said Mercedes. We called Century 21 and were told they’re not involved — which means some more catting around needs to be done before this house’s mouse is pinned down.
