News Hits doesn’t mean to sound bossy, but if you live in southwest Detroit — or even if you don’t — you should attend the public forum regarding the proposed expansion of a truck and train shipping yard at Junction and Livernois.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is evaluating the environmental impact that its proposed plan to expand a shipping yard at Junction and Livernois will have on the neighborhood and MDOT wants your input. Let them know how you feel about a plan that involves tearing down 74 homes and 78 businesses, as well as increasing traffic to about 16,000 trucks a day by 2025, compared to about 7,000 today. Those numbers are from a June report by the Detroit City Planning Commission, which opposes the plan.
You may want to ask MDOT why the project is being proposed in one of the few Detroit neighborhoods to experience a population increase in the last decade — a whopping 6 percent compared to a citywide population decline of 7.5 percent, according to the 2000 Census.
