Proactive

Bazaar times — Proactive is a big believer in pursuing enlightened self-interest, and this week we offer up an item that makes doing so a snap. The Women’s Survival Center of Oakland County is a worthy nonprofit organization the offers free legal services, counseling, mentoring and more to victims of domestic abuse. The group also operates “Maggie’s Rising Stars,” a subsidized child care center in Pontiac. So, obviously, supporting these folks is an enlightened act. Here’s the self-interest part: On Saturday, Dec. 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the group will hold a holiday bazaar offering affordable gifts. Did you catch that? Affordable gifts. Money raised goes to the child-care center at 76 Williams St. in Pontiac, where the event will be held. Call 248-752-2255.

What goes around — The group Recycling for Charities will be at the Walgreens located at 30852 Woodward Ave. in Royal Oak for 48 hours, beginning at 5 p.m., Friday, Dec. 9. Warm clothing will be collected and given to St. Vincent de Paul; nonperishable food items are sought for the Gleaners Community Food Bank, and still-wrapped toys will be passed along to Toys for Tots. As for Recycling for Charities, it’s a nonprofit electronics recycler that will be collecting pagers, digital cameras, ink cartridges, etc. There’ll be a semitruck there that they want to fill with donations. Give ’em a hand, or at least some mittens and an old cell phone.
