Food for thought — If you’ve ever wanted to participate in a food fight, this could be your chance. But dump those visions of Animal House. The national food drive dubbed “Food Fight” kicks off Nov. 6 and runs through Nov. 13. The whole thing was started in 1997 by students at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. It’s a food fight because the drive is a competition — participating colleges are ranked on the total pounds of food collected during the week. Cash donations are accepted; each dollar translates to seven pounds of food in the school’s ranking. The winners receive an additional $500 donation from the event’s corporate sponsors. The week will be filled with fund- and food-raising activities, culminating in a door-to-door food drive Nov. 12 and 13. Organizers expect to collect 1.1 million pounds nationally this year, with 21 business schools participating. Local donations go to Food Gatherers, Ann Arbor’s Second Harvest affiliate. Lighting the way — If you’re looking for a contemplative way to mark World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, try the Archdiocese of Detroit’s candlelight vigil. The event will be held at the National Shrine of the Little Flower on the corner of 12 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak. The vigil begins at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call the Archdiocese of Detroit’s Department of Parish Life & Services at 313-237-5778 or the Office for Catholic Social Action at 313-237-5905.
