Green scene — Tired of pollution, air quality alerts and soaring gas prices? Then the “Green Cruise” might just be for you.
Metro Detroit, not surprisingly, is the sixth-most polluted region in the United States for year-round concentrations of soot, according to an analysis released last year by the Michigan Lung Association.
Participants of all ages are encouraged to join the cruise by walking, running, biking, rollerblading and skateboarding — to name a few forms of clean transportation. At 4 p.m. there will be a rally where community members will explain the importance of alternative forms of transportation while announcing the “Green Cruiser” of the year.
To nominate someone you feel is particularly “green” when it comes to alternative transportation, go to sierraclub.org/community/oakland and download a nomination form or contact Melissa Damaschke at 248-435-5277 to have one sent to you. Nomination forms must be submitted by Friday, Aug. 5.
The cruise will begin on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 2 p.m. in St. John’s parking lot at Woodward Avenue and 11 Mile Road and last until 4 p.m.
On a roll — While we’re talking green transportation, Proactive wants to make note of something called “The Road to Detroit.” Beginning Saturday, Aug. 20, hundreds of young people from around the country are expected to converge on Detroit for three days to let the auto industry know that there is a growing market out there for cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles.
