Peet's Coffee to close Michigan branches

Less than a year and a half after opening up retail stores throughout Michigan, Peet's Coffee & Tea has announced it's shuttering all in-state locations, as well as all outlets in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Today is the last day for business.

“After nearly an 18-month assessment of our Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania markets, we are closing the remaining stores and ending our retail presence in these areas to focus on our top-performing markets,” a Peet's press release said. “These store closures include the remaining six in Ohio, two in Michigan and three in Pennsylvania as they have not performed to our expectations.”

Store baristas told Metro Times they weren't given much information on the sudden closure, citing only "financial reasons."

The press release said employees will receive six weeks of pay and benefits through the end of January.

The two Michigan locations, one in Ann Arbor (1423 East Stadium Blvd.)  and the other in Grosse Pointe (17043 Kercheval Ave.), will be serving up hot drinks as normal today.
