Kids can pick up free backpacks and books at The Wright tomorrow

Families in need of school supplies for the upcoming semester can stock up on backpacks, books, and other items at The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History on Saturday, Dec. 16.

The Wright has teamed up with the nonprofit Legacy of Literacy, Inc. for the “Give the Gift of Reading” event from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. featuring free goodies for children ages 5 to 16, while supplies last.

Mary Hiller, the Wright Museum's social media manager, says 500 backpacks, books, and toys are expected to be given away, but children must be present with an adult/guardian to receive the handouts.

“As a community-based institution, we want all kids to receive and enjoy gifts this holiday season. This includes the gift of literacy, which is so vital for children in our community to have access to,” Hiller says.

Visitors can also take part in The Wright’s family activities series, and make festive beaded key chains and holiday ornaments.

Hiller says Legacy of Literacy, Inc. also sponsors The Wright’s Children Interactive Storytime events on the second Sunday of every month, where all attendees also get free books.

The “Give the Gift of Reading” event is free and open to the public. However, if you’re looking to explore the museum’s exhibitions, general admission is free for members and children under age 3. Otherwise: $8 for adults, $5 for seniors 62 and older; and $5 for children ages 3-12.
