Faded picture

A picture postcard amid the ruins of the old Highland Park Holiday Inn between Woodward and John R near Davison reflects better days.

The yellowed postcard, which depicts smiling businessmen in leisure suits standing on burnt orange shag carpeting, starkly contrasts with the results of 15 years of neglect and decay that have occurred since the hotel closed its doors for good.

The skinny-dippers at ASS are certain that in its prime the pool sparkled during Julys past. Now, the pit is filled with debris and garbage.

The good news is that the joint is slated for demolition on July 14.

One neighbor, expressing delight that the dilapidated inn is on its way out, did have one bit of trepidation, saying, “I just hope the rats don’t scatter all over the neighborhood.”

The Abandoned Structure Squad was unable to contact the building owner to find out what might be coming in its place. And the city official we talked to was of no help, telling us that the city has experienced so many layoffs it’s difficult to keep track of developments.
