Dubious achievement awards 2004

What a year it was. From the grandiose to the trifling, dubious achievements proliferated. With Kwame Kilpatrick as the ringmaster and City Council as a sideshow, the constant circus of Detroit politics ensured there would be no shortage of Doobies being handed out in what has become an annual tradition here at Metro Times. But its not just Motown politicos who earned the lovely gold-plated statuettes being handed out this week. Slogging through a year’s worth of stories that appeared in the local media, we were able to harvest a veritable cornucopia of screwups, misdeeds, blunders and outright dopiness, from Gov. Jennifer Granholm donning dark shades in a desperate (and self-defeating) attempt to make Michigan’s cities seem “cool” to the Shelby Township man who attempted to fend off police by twirling his pet poodle bola-like from the end of its leash, our less-than-distinguished panel of Doobie judges had no problem identifying scores of bumblers and wrongdoers worthy of recognition. And so, with an all-kazoo orchestra playing the appropriate fanfare, we offer up all the losers who earned a Doobie for their performances in 2004.
