Detroiter Harry Baker faces a September deadline to leave his Margareta Street home. The disabled Vietnam vet refinanced his house twice to get money for home repairs and to pay expenses, but couldn’t keep up with increasing house payments. His home is valued at $30,000; he owes $81,000 on it. Baker says he could manage his $860 monthly mortgage payment with his $2,000-a-month disability income, but claims the company that holds the note on his house wouldn’t work with him. “They make it sound like it’s impossible for me to stay,” he says.
