All art, all the time: It’s hard to believe that, decades ago, art students actually worked and lived in museums. Lacking in proper facilities, their studios were often located in the attics of renowned institutions. With that kind of all-access pass, young artists spent all day sketching or second-guessing masterpieces, and at night, they’d gather in ballroom-sized galleries, pooled around a Picasso or lazily sprawled on the parquet floor, drinking wine and discussing a day’s work. Metro Detroiters are offered this kind of experience when Detroit Artists Market hosts Art Around-The-Clock, a free 168-hour marathon-run exhibition for the 2005 Members Invitational, a mixed-media show featuring works by 90 local artists. An opening reception kicks off the event at 6-10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 11. But if other plans get in the way that evening, check it out anytime, any day, Feb. 11-18. Kids in the jail: Local nonprofit organization Project A.R.T., a group dedicated to decreasing juvenile delinquency, has been working hard to educate young Detroiters on the art and business of hip hop. In collaboration with Chance Films and Alternatives For Girls, the group presents a free screening of the documentary Juvies. Narrated by Mark Wahlberg and featuring a poetry reading by rap artist Mos Def, the film “explores the increasingly important issue of prosecuting juveniles as adults and incarcerating them in adult facilities.”
