Come summer of next year, people crossing over to Windsor through the tunnel will get a taste of Motown aesthetics in addition to the toll fee. The Detroit Artists Market is coordinating a public art project, “Art on the Vent,” along with the Detroit & Canada Tunnel Corp. A $40,000 stipend will be given to a local artist or group to create artwork on the main air vent and surrounding structures at the tunnel’s entrance on the Detroit side. The surface is 90 feet wide by 20 feet high and visible from the Downtown People Mover. The finished project is scheduled to be unveiled during the Major League All-Star Game being held in Detroit in July 2005. The deadline for submissions to Detroit Artists Market is Oct. 15, with the commission to be awarded after the first of the year. Actual production would start in May 2005. The commission has already set the local art world abuzz. With some 3.5 million cars going through the tunnel each year, “Art on the Vent” could potentially boost the city’s image and provide significant exposure for whoever is chosen to create the work. Speaking of Hilberrys, the Susanne Hilberry Gallery is featuring an exhibition of new work by native Detroiter John Corbin and London born Chris Hyndman. Corbin constructs brightly colorful and blooming models of glucose and sucrose molecules (that’s sugar, folks); Hyndman is characterized by his vivid depiction of plaid patterns.
