As usual there’s an abundance of activity in Detroit’s art world this week. Here are some events not to miss:
Adding to the consortium of indie art ventures popping up around town, the 555 Gallery has found a home in Detroit thanks to 4731 Gallery owner Ric Geyer, who bought 555 its new space at 4848 Grand River Ave., just down the street from Geyer’s gallery/ art incubator. The 555 arts collective was formerly based in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. The party starts Friday at 8 p.m. ($5 donation suggested) featuring music and a host of art by such folks as Jacob “Monte” Martinez, Camilo Pardo, Mark Arminski, Jerry Vile, Davin Brainard, Gwen Joy and many more. The gallery hopes to offer not only exhibition and performance space but affordable workspaces for artists; studios are available. Visit 555arts.org for more info.
You might recognize the work of Joseph Daniel Fiedler, an illustration professor at the College for Creative Studies, as he’s done illustrations for such publications as the Detroit Free Press, Time magazine, The Washington Post, etc. An exhibit of his work, entitled Curmudgeon, is showing in the Fine Arts Gallery at CCS through Oct. 17. You can meet the artist at a reception tonight (Sept. 29), from 4 to 6 p.m. CCS is located at 201 E. Kirby St..
A collection of some of the best in contemporary Detroit art is displayed at the 2004 Biennial at the Detroit Artists Market. Eight artists are highlighted, including Kristin Beaver, whose large painting of two women standing next to each other, posing against a wall, is a sight to behold. The show comes down Oct. 17.
