An NSO charity event is the only reason J.K. Simmons agreed to throw the first pitch on Opening Day

The Detroit Tigers asked Academy Award winner and Detroit-native J.K. Simmons to throw out the first pitch of the Tigers first home game of the season. He said yes, but only if a charity event for the Neighborhood Services Organization could be held. 

Suffice it to say, the Detroit Tigers made that charity event happen.

They contacted NSO, who quickly complied with the request. On Monday, April 6 from 9 to 11 a.m., a meet-and-greet with Simmons will be held at Motor City Casino's Sound Board. Guests can pay $50 to shake hands with the actor who played the role of Detroit Tigers manager Frank Perry in For the Love of the Game. 

According to a press release, Simmons has long been a quiet supporter of the NSO. Proceeds from the event will benefit the nonprofit, which provides services to the homeless like recovery, mental health and addiction treatment, early childhood education, youth programs, and crisis and suicide intervention for people and families in Wayne and Oakland counties. 

Simmons will make initial remarks at the event, which will be followed by a Q&A session and a subsequent meet and greet. 

Following the event, Simmons will throw out the first pitch of the season at Comerica Park.
