The quintet motored by trailer across the state from Ann Arbor Saturday morning, arriving in Holland by noon. We led a joyful group ride throughout town and ended up playing a concert for 80 happy passers-by.
It was a righteous first day capped off by a ride-by surprise performance for a couple dozen unsuspecting people gathered in a park at sunset. They were astonished when we revealed our piano, which we cover with a tarp. When we started pulling out washboards and string basses, all from our bikes -- it was all over but the swingin'. We packed up and pedaled away, leaving smiles in our wake; really, that's the scene for a piano bike quintet!
We're staying at our friend Rick Slachta's house. Thanks to Rick, and to Mike Clark at Velo City Cycles for hosting the concert, where we encouraged our audience to contribute to the "Motion Initiative," a local group that teaches cycle maintenance and provides bikes to kids.
We absolutely love playing our tunes in unlikely places, and putting all the usual barriers and protocols of performing in the usual manner behind us.
