Do you remember the 21st night of September? Love was changing the minds of pretenders... while chasing the clouds away.
Today is Sept. 21, which obviously means that is time to enjoy Earth, Wind & Fire's 1978 hit, "September."
The song was co-written by Detroit native Allee Willis, who was then a struggling songwriter in Los Angeles when she got the call from Earth, Wind & Fire leader Maurice White to help on the band's next record.
As for the song's joyous yet nonsensical lyrics, Willis told NPR in 2014:
"The, kind of, go-to phrase that Maurice used in every song he wrote was 'ba-dee-ya,' " she says. "So right from the beginning he was singing, 'Ba-dee-ya, say, do you remember / Ba-dee-ya, dancing in September.' And I said, 'We are going to change 'ba-dee-ya' to real words, right?' "
Of course, White did not. Nevertheless, the song has become an undeniable ear-worm. In fact, music services are anticipating a spike in streams of the song today. We'll help — you can listen to the jam below.
