Nightstalker is a stoner rock band from Athens Greece, and the Dead Rock Commandos album is the latest release from local label Small Stone Records. Every now and again, Small Stone throws up a few surprises but Nightstalker isn’t one of them. The riffs are heavy and the vocals are reminiscent of early Sabbath-era Ozzy. Fans of Kyuss and Soundgarden will rejoice.
City Slang faves Twoven have recorded a drum and bass version of the White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army”, and it’s killer. The track retains the spirit of the original, but the beats add more than background, offering a whole new dimension to an already brilliant song. Awesome.
Jeff Scott’s second album, The Long Way Home, is coming out on Stewart Francke’s Blue Boundary Records, and it’s pretty damn good. Scott certainly sounds authentic as he sings about burning bridges and poor souls in California (“the ocean breeze blowing in your hair” – urrgghh). Sometimes it’s a little too easy to imagine his songs playing over a romantic montage scene on Dawson’s Creek, but for the most part it is refreshing to hear a singer / songwriter who means it.
