Aretha releases Gloria Gaynor cover off new album

Last week, Aretha Franklin released the first track from her forthcoming album, a cover of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." The new album, a collection of covers called Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics, will be out October 21st and features production from Andre 3000 and Babyface. 

The second little offering from the album is a cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive." Where this cover diverges from the Adele track, Franklin approaches the song from a different genre style. Instead of going for a straight up disco knock off, she eases back and enters contemporary jazz territory, that is until the 1:10 mark when the BPMs go through the fucking roof in favor of a familiar disco beat.

Like the cover of "Rolling in the Deep," Aretha incorporates another song in the later portion of the song. This time, instead of fellow Motown-ers, she channels Destiny's Child, with fragments of their tune, "Survivor." How fitting.

Again, Aretha Franklin delivers a shining performance. While there was chatter about whether or not her voice was treated in post production on the Adele cover, it sounds pure on this track. Let's see if it will become as hot of a club track in 2014 as the original was in 1978.
