As we noted a week or so back, Jack White recently wrote and recorded the theme for the upcoming James Bond flick, Quantum of Solace, doing it as a duet with Alicia Keys. The rumor for months, however, was that British rock trainwreck Amy Winehouse (whom we still love to death, as does, not so strangely, Keith Richards, who recently stated in an interview that she's one major modern artist he'd pay big money to see) was supposed to do the theme tune.
Well, now the truth comes out. Ms. Winehouse and her producer Mark Ronson did indeed write and record a tune for the movie -- but she's now claiming that her Bond theme was rejected in favor of Jack's because the filmmakers wanted something "clean and boring"...at least according to a report today in Britain's NME.
In an interview with New Magazine, Amy said she plans to "prove that they [the filmmakers] have made a big mistake...I do think they could have waited a bit. If they want a worldwide hit, I have them all up here [pointing at her head]."
WInehouse told the magazine that she plans to finish her rejected version and possibly release it the same week that the strange duo of White and Keys release theirs. Astute Detroit rock fans will note this is not a first, however. Detroit's own Alice Cooper has never fulfilled one of his biggest dreams in life -- namely providing a Bond theme song. When his "The Man With The Golden Gun" tune was rejected in '73 for the film of the same name, AC released the track on Muscle of Love, his final album with the original Alice Cooper Band (and fucking great they were, too!).
Winehouse ended by saying: "I guess they are going for clean-cut and boring. When I do release mine -- and I am tempted to do it on the same day -- this would be the bigger hit. If they change their minds, I'm waiting!"
C'mon, we vote for a full-fledged boxing match outside in Cass Coridor the day of the release between White and Winehouse. (Yeah, White has the boxing credentials...but Winehouse is batshit crazy...and that counts for a lot!). At any rate, the MT staff are backing Ms. Winehouse in this battle of the "wits."
