Post rock band Slint is coming to Detroit on Friday, and it will be the group’s first ever performance here. It’s sure to be a hell of an occasion; Slint has one of rock’s most loyal and adoring fan bases. We grabbed Brian McMahon are threw a few questions at him.
You guys take long breaks. How do you know when it’s time to reconvene?
A lot of it has had to do with Barry Hogan [from All Tomorrow’s Parties]. His festivals are just super-fun, and he’s a very persuasive, very persistent guy. It’s largely be precipitated by him, honestly. But also it kinda seems like, after we haven’t played for a while, people start bugging us in general. That’s the main impetus really.
Do you have any plans to record?
No, we’re just gonna stick with the “hits.”
Any fond memories of Detroit?
I personally do. I played there in a band called the For Carnation, and we played at the Magic Stick. Fun was had by all 30 people that were there. I’ve really enjoyed walking around Detroit. This is the first time Slint has played Detroit.
I’m sure there’ll be more than 30 this time
I hope so.
What are your plans for set?
We’ve done a couple of different sets, but we do have a standard set that we like to stick with. No Earth-shattering surprises. No new material, so it’s just cuts from the records.
What’s next, after this tour?
I think I’m looking at a move. I’ve been in Louieville for the past three years and my partner is going to be starting a new grad school program, so we’re gonna most likely leave Louieville. I can’t to see what happens here. No musical projects planned at present, but I’m not ruling it out.
