In 1846 the New York Philharmonic gave the first U.S. performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Why did the first performance take place in New York and not other cities? What were the local musicians hoping to achieve through the performance of the Ninth? Barbara Haws, the archivist and historian of the New York Philharmonic since 1984, will address these questions and more in a discussion on the Philharmonic’s concert experience and its relationship to the broader cultural life of the city.
