It only happens twice a year, but it's an unforgettable day of fun and competition at the Popps Packing Pinewood Derby. It's a fundraiser for which the Hamtramck Gallery has invited 100 artists to design and build pinewood derby cars for this event. All cars are displayed in the gallery during the silent auction then raced on a regulation track during the event. Neighborhood youth were also asked to participate in designing and building their own derby cars and will be part of a special Kids Race the day of the event.
There will be music by DJ George Rahme and live performances by Jimmy Ohio, and Kathy Leisen & Nathan Lee Shafer. It's all free and open to the public, and it runs from 4 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, at Popps Packing, 12138 St. Aubin, Hamtramck.
