Rarely are the words “cheek swab” and “hair clippings” associated with art. But when bio-political artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg teamed up with queer and transgender rights activist Chelsea Manning, the two collaborated on a sculptural portraiture project derived from Manning’s DNA. Manning, a former intelligence analyst for the U.S Department of Defense who is best known for serving seven years of a 35-year sentence in military prison after leaking government documents during her deployment in Iraq in 2009, was released in 2017 after President Barack Obama commuted her sentence.
