Anyone who lives outside of downriver probably doesn't know what the heck we're talking about, but since a certain MT staffer calls this suburban collective home, it's on our radar.
The Mt. Carmel Polish Festival is an annual event held in the parking lot of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. The parish's name has been recently changed to Our Lady of Scapular, but most residents still refer to it by its former name.
A mainly Polish parish, the church even holds services in the language and this festival helps celebrate the country's heritage. Find many pierogi and a lot of people doing the polka at this festival. There are also traditional dancing shows and a bingo tent.
Kids will enjoy the candy tent, carnival rides, and slew of games available to play for just a few bucks while adults are keen on the cheap drafts of bud light and just hanging out. With something for everything, it's enough fun for the whole family. Plus, it's a goddamn downriver tradition.
The festival will run Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 976 Pope John Paul II in Wyandotte. And yes, Wyandotte has a street named after the pope.
