You don’t have to be a Detroit resident to attend; the even is open to everyone facing the threat of foreclosure or eviction.
“Experienced lawyers and activists will be on hand to provide free and confidential legal advice, and to help you organize to save your home,” according to the event’s sponsors.
A key word there is “organize.” Some members of this group have been active on the foreclosure front for years, and one of the things they have learned is that public pressure is often the only thing that will convince banks to work with homeowners trying to stave off foreclosure.
Collective action, say activists, has frequently proven to be crucial:
“Across the country, people have been saving their homes by working together. Find out what you can do to stop your foreclosure if you are willing to fight back.”
In addition to Saturday’s event — which features free parking in the church’s lot — Detroit Eviction Defense also holds weekly organizing and strategy meetings at 6 p.m. every Thursday.
