Terrence Dixon joins the Detroit techno club gold rush

You've heard about that German guy who wants to build a techno club in the old Fisher Body 21 Plant and about the Magic Stick's rebranding as techno club Populux. The people behind both projects have commented that despite Detroit's longstanding techno legacy, the city does not currently have a club solely dedicated to techno music — and they're vying to fill that void.

The latest project to join this Detroit techno "gold rush" is the proposed Minimal Detroit Lounge, headed up by DJ Terrence Dixon, who has started a crowdfunding page for the project.

In a statement on Facebook, Dixon says he has big plans for the club: techno godfather Juan Atkins is confirmed as a resident DJ, an in-house sound system will be designed by Michael Fotias, and the club will host acts like Thomas Fehlmann, Jeff Mills, and Richie Hawtin.

Dixon also says he wants the club to be alcohol-free, "because that's the way it use to be here." He says he wants to serve what they used to call a "smart drink," which will be called an "md drink."

"Once we get the keys I want to open the door to all the people that can make this happen, this is not a fly-by night, not a one off, but a pillar in Detroit for years to come," he added.

While Detroit has plenty of clubs which host techno and house acts, none do so exclusively. It remains to be seen if the scene could support three such venues, or if they will have to resort to expanding beyond house and techno.

Despite the fact that the venue's address has not yet been announced, an opening date has been announced for May 23. Read more at the crowdfunding page here.

Meanwhile, Populux opens on April 18 with a show featuring Derrick Carter and DJ Sneak. The Fisher Body 21 project has no target completion date at this time.
