Eminem added a powerful opening verse to his performance of "Nowhere Fast" alongside Kehlani during Sunday night's iHeartRadio Music Awards — and it was aimed at the National Rifle Association.
"This whole country is going nuts/and the NRA is in our way/they're responsible for this whole productions/they hold the strings, they control the puppet/And they threaten to take away donor bucks so they know the government
The performance followed a powerful introduction by Big Sean and Alex Moscou, a survivor of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Fla. that killed 17 people on Valentine's Day.
"We're tired of hearing politicians send their thoughts and prayers to us and doing nothing to make the necessary changes to prevent this tragedy from happening again," Moscou said. "If those elected to represent us won't do what's right and keep us safe, then we're gonna be too loud for them to ignore."
This is not the first time the rapper has made televised political remarks. In October 2017, Em delivered a fiery freestyle for the BET Awards during which he fired off a "Fuck you" to Trump supporters. Revival, Em's chart-topping 2017 return, is laden with highly political sentiments.
However, Eminem has had a few gun-related run-ins with the law himself. In 2000, he was arrested in Royal Oak after pulling and pointing an unloaded gun at the ground. The following day, Mathers assaulted John Guerrera inside Hard Rock Cafe. He was arrested and received two years of probation. Charges were later dropped.
