Michigan Sound Conference

The second annual conference from the Detroit Sound Conservancy looks to be fascinating and fun. In any week aside from Memorial Day weekend/the Movement festival, we’d have dedicated a feature article to this exceptional event, so we’ll try to convince you to attend in these few words. The theme for the conference is “how has Michigan generally, and Detroit in particular, been a leader in the creation of the global modern soundscape?” Dozens of enthused presented will do talk about a vast array of local music, past and present. Of particular interest: Karen VanderKloot DiChiera on women composers; Tresor’s Dimitri Hegemann on the Detroit-Berlin connection; Daniel Patton on Creem’s archives; Rebekah Farrugia and Kellie D. Hay on women and hip-hop in Detroit; Francis Grunow on “the Cass Tech sound,” and Mike Rubin moderating Dave Tompkins’ presentation at 5 p.m. in the sheet music room, “Jam Pony Expressway through Your Skull: Taking the Detroit-Miami Line.”
