Elizabeth Pilar

In 1988, 20-year-old Detroiter Elizabeth Pilar spent two months in Red China. Now, more than 25 years later, that odyssey is being published in book form. A Blue Moon in China describes how she stretched $400 over two months by traveling “third class,” right alongside the rank-and-file people of China at a time when Mao Zedong’s rule was a living memory. In keeping with the theme of Women’s History Month, Pilar will discuss women in Chinese history (and sign copies of her book) at Midtown’s nonfiction bookstore.
