Gary Grimshaw funeral this Sunday

The funeral of beloved local artist Gary Grimshaw will be held at the MOCAD on Sunday, January 19 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow at the Scarab Club.

MOCAD will host visitation the day before, Saturday, January 18 from 6-8 p.m., with music to follow.

Grimshaw died at noon on Monday, January 13, having suffered with ill health for many years. His work became synonymous with 1960’s Detroit rock ’n’ roll and, in the years since, has become highly collectible. Interviewing him in 2006, Grimshaw told me that, “I can’t afford to buy my own work.”

In a 2007 Metro Times story about Grimshaw, Michael Jackman wrote that, “The posters Grimshaw created were psychedelic and heady, heavily embroidered with bright colors and flowing text. Not only would drug-addled concertgoers get lost in the imagery, Grimshaw would lose himself in the process, burning through jobs the night before a deadline.”
