Detroiters may still be waiting to receive their absentee ballots (and to find out for certain what a judge has to say about letting Mike Duggan run for mayor as a write-in candidate), but residents can get a jump on their decision-making thanks to a nifty website produced by the democracy-loving gals over at the League of Women Voters.
"These are pivotal times in Detroit and residents need accurate and complete information about the candidates' positions on key issues — in their own words, without bias or favoritism," explained Susan Smith, president of the League of Women Voters of Michigan. "With a large field of mayoral candidates and City Council members being elected by district for the first time, this could be a potentially confusing election. We know voters in Detroit want to be informed, motivated and empowered to vote in the upcoming primary and general elections."

Also, there will be a candidate forum tonight (Wednesday, July 10) sponsored by the United Way of Southeast Michigan and host by our WDET radio pal Craig Fahle.
"We'll highlight key issues regarding education, jobs and the welfare of our community — issues that affect our city and the surrounding region" organizers said. "This is a critical time for Detroit and we want to make sure you get an up-close look at the candidates vying for this coveted position. The top two vote-getters in the August primary election will go on the ballot for the general mayoral election in November."
