City Slang: Jennifer Westwood and the Waycross Georgia Farmboys live

Recent City Slang star Jennifer Westwood is a busy country girl. As well as her own blossoming solo career, she has started a band with Dylan Dunbar and Jackson Smith called the Waycross Georgia Farmboys. Where the Georgia connection comes from, we’re not sure. But in front of a sparse crowd at the New Dodge in Hamtramck on Tuesday night, they kicked ass.

The first thing that has to be admired is the solid guitar combo of Dunbar and Smith, who effortlessly play off each other despite this being only the second gig for the band. They grin like goons at each other, sharing an inside joke that is obviously hilarious while kicking out some insane acoustic licks.

And then there is the vocal interplay between Dunbar and Westwood. Fittingly, the band kicks off with Johnny Cash & June Carter’s “Jackson”, a song that suits this duo’s voices perfectly. Westwood has a country wail that can match the best of them, while Dunbar’s voice is like thick syrup.

It’s very cool to witness the beginning of what could be the finest olde timee country band in the area, especially when it runs through bluegrass-d versions of Ozzy’s “Crazy Train” and Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me”. Even watching the Tigers lose couldn’t spoil this mood. Much.
