Second Place, black and white

This picture of her sister and young cousin was snapped while Kimberly Max was leaving St. Thomas on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship at the end of March. Max used a Pentax camera and Kodak Tri-X black-and-white film. The photo was taken for a class assignment and she developed it herself. She doesn’t think that her sister, the bikini-clad woman lounging on the deck of the cruise ship, will be too pleased when her picture is printed in Metro Times. But she doesn’t seem very concerned. "I thought it was kind of funny," she explains. "It just went along with the whole week of the cruise."

Photography has been Max’s longtime hobby; she has had her work displayed at her school board office and was also featured in a high-school art show in her senior year. Max has just finished up her second year at Eastern Michigan University and in the fall she’ll transfer to the Pratt School of Art and Design in Brooklyn, N.Y.
