Michael Jackman reps Metro Times at the Society of Professional Journalists Awards

The Detroit Society of Professional Journalists held its annual awards ceremony at the San Marino Club in Troy on Thursday, and once again longtime Metro Times contributor Michael Jackman was recognized for his great work.

Jackman earned praise for three 2018 cover stories. He won second place, print, Class A: environment reporting for "Burned," an April 11 story about activist efforts to shut down Detroit’s incinerator (and quite possibly the last word on the the matter, with the announcement this year that the incinerator would finally be shut down).

He also won second place, print, Class A: features reporting for "Urban Cowboy," an Oct. 3 cover story on horseman Speed Miller. (A side note, that story received a noticeable uptick in pageviews when rapper Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" became a meme.)

Jackman also earned third place, print, Class A: health reporting for "Taking things, literally," an Aug. 15 story about a support group for compulsive shoplifters in the Detroit area.

Kudos are also in order for former Metro Times reporter Allie Gross, who earned Young Journalist of the Year for her work at the Detroit Free Press. Congrats!
