Craftwerk artifacts

While driving down Woodward through Highland Park, most people are probably too busy gawking at hookers to take much notice of the historic neighborhoods just west of the main drag. Our abandoned house this week is in an area of Highland Park that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its proliferation of “Arts & Crafts” homes (think Frank Lloyd Wright on a smaller scale). Around the turn of the century, architect Albert Kahn designed several of Detroit’s most notable buildings, also creating this historic neighborhood. The house at 147 Moss is a typical “Arts & Crafts” bungalow, featuring a large front porch and many windows. A fire brought the roof down, filling the interior with debris. Although the building appears beyond redemption, ASS (that’s Abandoned Structure Squad for the uninitiated) believes that any industrious architectural salvage company could do well to rescue the few beautiful “Arts & Crafts” accents that remain unscathed.
