The Detroit Institute of Arts gets kid-friendly

Do your kids need something to do this summer? The Detroit Institute of Arts has you covered. The museum is starting a new program, "Detroit Institute of Awesome!" which begins June 4and features artwork and activities aimed at kids ages 3-10.

Detroit Institute of Awesome! will feature family-friendly tours, art making, artist demonstrations and a special kid-friendly menu in CafeDIA every Saturday and Sunday. Some weekends, animated movies and puppet shows will be featured. 

Activities are free with museum admission for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. For residents of all other counties, tickets will be $12.50 for adults, $8 for seniors ages 65 and over, $6 for ages 6-17.

Here's the program's schedule for June 4 and 5:

Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5
Artist Demonstration: Noon-3 p.m.
Artists from Eastern Market's letterpress print studio, Signal-Return, demonstrate basics of letterpress printing using their on-site sign press and help visitors make their own sign.

Family Guided Tours: 1 and 3 p.m.
Visitors tour family and kid friendly art and learn ways to engage kids in lively discussions in future visits.

Drop-In Art Making: Noon-4 p.m.
Visitors learn how to use a simple loom and make their own piece.

Sunday, June 5
Drawing in the galleries: (for all ages), noon-4 p.m.

Drop-In Art-Making: (for all ages): Uchiwa, noon-4 p.m.
Uchiwa is a paper fan common in Japan. Visitors will learn about the tradition of making Uchiwa as they create their own.
