Teso Life, a U.S.-based Japanese department store chain that was founded in 2017 in New York City, plans to open its first Michigan location in the Detroit area.

The 12,000-square-foot store is planned for the mixed-use Asian-themed Sakura Novi development, which broke ground last year.

Teso Life is known for selling Japanese snacks, cosmetics, homeware, stationary, toys, and more. The chain has 15 stores across the U.S., with 15 more in development.

Other new tenants announced for Sakura Novi include Paris Baguette, a Korean-owned bakery chain specializing in French and Asian pastries, and Klawsome!, what bills itself as “the first stand-alone claw machine arcade in Michigan.” (It’s big in Japan.)

Previously announced tenants include Mikiya Wagyu Shabu House by the Chubby Cattle Group, Dancing Pine Korean Steak House, and Presotea Taiwanese boba tea shop.

The first restaurants are set to open in May 2025, with more stores expected to be announced.

The development also includes a townhome apartment complex, a public plaza, and a Japanese-themed garden path with a pond.
