Dragging a heavy rock ‘n’ roll sensibility through the backwoods swamps of the grittiest blues might sound like a daunting chore, but the power of a combo like Five Horse Johnson makes it seem as easy as flipping over a 45. Unafraid of getting their hands dirty in the goo-goo-muck, they might upset purists at both ends, but they sound mean enough not to have to worry about it.
